Health is Wealth

Imagine The KPIs of Life as a pyramid. At the very base lies the most essential KPI: Physical Health. Without a solid foundation here, climbing toward your goals is like building a castle out of cards. Not everything about our physical health is within our control and I want to be sensitive to this reality. It is a blessing to be born with no physical impairments and one that I don't take for granted. That gratitude is what drives me to prioritize sustaining good physical health.

So, what exactly is physical health? Simply put, it’s how well your body functions — free from disease or injury, fueled by good nutrition, regular movement, and proper rest. It’s your body’s ability to handle daily life with energy, strength, and resilience. And as an added bonus, it's how you feel about it when you look in the mirror.

Why Physical Health Matters Most

Good health isn’t just a luxury—it’s your life’s most valuable asset. When you’re physically well, life feels smoother, more enjoyable, and less stressful. When you’re not, everything else gets harder: work, relationships, doing everyday activities, and even your mood can take a hit. That’s why controlling your Physical Health KPI is non-negotiable on your path to a successful, fulfilling life.

But here’s the good news: you can manage this KPI through five simple but powerful controls:

  1. Eat a balanced, nutritious food

  2. Move your body regularly

  3. Prioritize quality rest and sleep

  4. Avoid harmful habits like drugs, alcohol, and other poor habits

  5. Know your body—study it, listen to it, and get regular checkups

Let’s break these down, so you can take control starting today.

It's About What's In You, Not On You

I was watching a TED Talk with Dr. Rupy Aujla, a leading expert on nutritional medicine, and he spoke about the truth of nutrition. In his speech he suggests that dieting doesn't have to be an overnight overhaul; instead, that you should start small by simply adding one colorful fruit or veggie to your plate and eat it first. I thought that this was sound advice to relay.

If you search for good diets you will find that they come in many flavors—Mediterranean, Paleo, Vegan, Keto—but they all agree on a few key things: ditch processed junk, cut down on sugars and trans fats, and focus on whole foods rich in macronutrients—protein, carbs, and fats. With that in mind, my quick rule of thumb is simple to sustain a healthy diet—aim to get 80% of your calories from whole, unprocessed foods. If you're wondering what that looks like, you're in the right place. Just focus on those macronutrients:

  • For protein: Think chicken breast, salmon, tofu, beans, Greek yogurt.

  • For carbs: Load up on fruits and veggies like spinach, sweet potatoes, apples, blueberries (these are nature’s powerhouses)

  • For fats: The fats from healthy protein sources like those mentioned above, avocados, cheese, nuts—the good stuff.

Lastly, don’t forget water! You'd be surprised how much sugar and empty calories are found in soda, juices, and sports drinks. Instead of drinking these calories, quench your thirst with what your body actually needs! Water is 60% of our body and serves as our natural lubricant, coolant, and nutrient transporter. Aim for 8 cups a day and make it your go-to drink. Your body will reward you from the inside out so drink your water and mind your business.

Move It or Lose It: The Power of Physical Activity

Fueling your body is step one. Step two? Using it! “If you don’t use it, you lose it” isn’t just a saying—it’s science.

Regular exercise isn’t just about looks; it wards off diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and even boosts your mental health by releasing those feel-good endorphins.

And don’t worry if you’re a beginner—start small. Take small but intentional actions like parking far from the store, swap bar nights for gym dates or sporting outings with friends, replace fast food with home cooking, swap soda for water, replace Netflix and doom scrolling with a walk. These options are endless to get your body active. These little wins add up fast and set you on a path to lasting physical health. What good are riches if you aren't physically healthy enough to enjoy it to the fullest?

Recharge Right: Sleep is Non-Negotiable

Our bodies run like battery-powered machines and they need recharging. Sleep is your body’s nightly tune-up, helping muscle recovery, immune function, brain power, and heart health.

Eight hours is the magic number, but if that feels impossible, try this:

  • Set a bedtime alarm 8 hours before you must wake

  • Stop eating and drinking an hour before that bedtime

  • Keep your phone far away and your room cool and dark

Practice doing this for a few weeks and see how well and naturally you will get to sleeping. Sleep isn’t a luxury—it’s the foundation of everything the body needs to operate optimally.

Know Thyself: Study Your Body to Stay Ahead

“An unexamined life is not worth living.” - Socrates

This great line from the Greek philosopher, Socrates, applies to your health as well. You can’t manage what you don’t measure. For that reason, regular physicals, blood work, and checkups are critical to ensuring that we have a strong Physical Health KPI. Going to the doctor for regular check ups reveal what’s going on beneath the surface, keeping you ahead of trouble. Many chronic illnesses can be prevented if we take proper measures to get periodic progress reports from experts.

Pro tip: Use your health insurance benefits! Most plans cover annual physicals and blood tests—treat them like your personal KPI scorecard.

By tracking your numbers and understanding what they mean, you take the guesswork out of health and make smarter choices every day.

The Bottom Line: Your Physical Health KPI is Your Life’s Launchpad

The Hall of Fame athlete and coach, Deion Sanders said it best: “If you look good, you feel good; if you feel good, you perform great.” That’s no athlete’s ego talking—that’s the power of intention. Good physical health sets you up to perform at your best, consistently. Nail this KPI, and every other goal—mental clarity, financial gain, career success, meaningful relationships—become that much easier to sustain.

Don’t get overwhelmed—focus on the basics: eat (and drink) well, move daily, sleep enough, avoid harmful habits, and get regular checkups. These are your keys to unlocking a vibrant, energized life.

Ready to build your foundation? Your Physical Health KPI is waiting. Take control today and watch how everything else falls into place!
